This picture must have been taken in 1979 or so. This is my dad, dressed up for the children as "Sinterklaas".
While next week is Thanksgiving here and everyone is preparing turkeys and has plans for family visit and/or travels, in the Netherlands children are getting all prepared for "Sinterklaas" and "pakjes avond". Which is on december 5th.
Again my dad as sinterklaas and that is me with my mom. Very afraid of this "strange man" in front of me. The story goes that I did recognize him and said "papa".
Now the last years I had totally embraced the new traditions of my new homeland and was all in Thanksgiving mood. This year however, with Ayanna being at the age that she starts understanding more, I suddenly did miss "sinterklaas". This might have been one reason for my little bit of homesickness the other day. We WILL celebrate "Sinterklaas" this year, Ayanna has already put her shoe by the fireplace (which mainly made her look at us confused) and received a little toy dog the following morning. The box from "sinterklaas" (red. oma en opa) is waiting in our bedroom.
Today we had our own little "sinterklaas" in town, in our home./>
And eventhough "Sinterklaas" rides on a white horse in the Netherlands, here in our home she rides a zebra...
